The Science of N-Back: How to Train Your Working Memory

What is the N-Back Task?
Introduced by Wayne Kirchner in 1958, the N-Back task is a continuous performance challenge. Here is how it works:
You are presented with a sequence of stimuli (such as visual shapes on a grid or spoken letters). For each stimulus, you must decide if it matches the one presented N steps earlier in the sequence.
- 1-Back: You compare the current item with the immediate previous one (e.g., A - A - B - B).
- 2-Back: You compare it with the item two steps back (e.g., A - B - A - C - B).
- 3-Back: You compare it with the item three steps back (e.g., A - B - C - A - D - B).
As $N$ increases, the task becomes exponentially harder, requiring you to constantly update your mental queue, discarding old information and adding the new.
